What’s the Best Season for Exterior Painting in Rhode Island?

July 30, 2022

You’ve got a vision for your home. You’ve the perfect curb appeal dialed in, with the right colors, the right accents, and that bold front door that ties it all together. You’ve even got the right painting company.

That leaves just one question: what’s the best season for exterior painting ? Is there an ideal time, or does it not matter?

We’re going to first share what makes a season perfect, digging into the right conditions for painting outdoors. Next, we’ll debunk a myth, then we’ll share a couple final tips for setting your project up for success.

What are the best conditions for exterior house painting?

Here’s what we look for:

  • Even temperatures. No day is perfectly consistent, of course, but it’s best to avoid weather that has extreme highs and lows.
  • Dry weather. Outdoor painting in the rain? Obviously not a good idea. But even wetter evening or early morning conditions, typical of springtime (for example), can leave your surfaces saturated throughout the day. It’s important to keep that in mind.
  • Not extremely hot. Did you know that paint can cure too fast? It’s true! Painting in direct, extremely hot sunlight can flash-cure your paint, causing potential adhesion issues. Wind can cause your paint to cure too fast too; think of it like blowing on a wet surface to make it dry.
  • Warmer weather. Modern paint formulas are forgiving of colder temps, but heat still poses a threat (as we touched on above). Warm weather is best.

What’s the best season for exterior painting?

Time to debunk a myth. Most folks think exterior painting in summer is best, but late spring and early fall actually offer the most ideal conditions. Especially because of the excellent paint products that are available, we can paint well into fall with total success.

Bonus tip!

Your local painting company is almost always planning a season in advance. This means that while they may have immediate openings, it’s always best to talk with them EARLY on about your ideas. In spring, lock in that summertime project. In the summer, map out your fall and winter updates.

Fall in Rhode Island is more than pumpkin patches and football weekends (to be clear, it is definitely mostly about that). But it’s also prime time for painting. The air is dry, the temperatures are steady, and the sun isn’t scorching your siding. It’s basically nature’s invitation to tackle projects you’ve been putting off. From exterior touch-ups to an interior refresh before the holidays, fall gives homeowners that rare combination of good weather and motivation, and that’s worth taking advantage of. Ready to grab a brush (or at least a plan) and get a few things checked off before the frost sets in? Consider this article your first line item. Why Fall Is Ideal for Painting in Rhode Island Autumn weather in New England offers something that painters love: stability. It’s not too hot, not too humid, and rarely too cold. Paint adheres better, dries evenly, and doesn’t blister under direct sunlight like it can in midsummer. Cooler temps also mean painters, whether you or a professional crew, can work longer without racing the clock or baking under a high sun. Add in fewer bugs, drier air, and reduced pollen, and you’ve got the recipe for beautiful finishes inside and out.
