What’s the Best Season for Exterior Painting in Rhode Island?
You’ve got a vision for your home. You’ve the perfect curb appeal dialed in, with the right colors, the right accents, and that bold front door that ties it all together. You’ve even got the right painting company.
That leaves just one question: what’s the best season for exterior painting ? Is there an ideal time, or does it not matter?
We’re going to first share what makes a season perfect, digging into the right conditions for painting outdoors. Next, we’ll debunk a myth, then we’ll share a couple final tips for setting your project up for success.
What are the best conditions for exterior house painting?

Here’s what we look for:
- Even temperatures. No day is perfectly consistent, of course, but it’s best to avoid weather that has extreme highs and lows.
- Dry weather. Outdoor painting in the rain? Obviously not a good idea. But even wetter evening or early morning conditions, typical of springtime (for example), can leave your surfaces saturated throughout the day. It’s important to keep that in mind.
- Not extremely hot. Did you know that paint can cure too fast? It’s true! Painting in direct, extremely hot sunlight can flash-cure your paint, causing potential adhesion issues. Wind can cause your paint to cure too fast too; think of it like blowing on a wet surface to make it dry.
- Warmer weather. Modern paint formulas are forgiving of colder temps, but heat still poses a threat (as we touched on above). Warm weather is best.
What’s the best season for exterior painting?
Time to debunk a myth. Most folks think exterior painting in summer is best, but late spring and early fall actually offer the most ideal conditions. Especially because of the excellent paint products that are available, we can paint well into fall with total success.
Bonus tip!
Your local painting company is almost always planning a season in advance. This means that while they may have immediate openings, it’s always best to talk with them EARLY on about your ideas. In spring, lock in that summertime project. In the summer, map out your fall and winter updates.
